Las Vegas is but a tiny spot on the Nevada state map. Nevertheless, this desert city has successfully become one of the greatest attractions in the world. It has over half a million residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau and, by all indications, this number continues to grow. According to a 2005 report from the City of Las Vegas’ authorities, the city adds around 2 persons to its population every hour! That’s not to mention the even bigger number of tourists that visit Las Vegas; there are supposed to be an average of 40 million tourists that flock to Las Vegas every year.
It is no secret what draws people to Las Vegas. Getting married? Las Vegas lets people get married quickly, cheaply and easily; there are no blood tests and no waiting period for a marriage license that costs around $55. Want to do some hiking, trekking and nature-tripping? Red Canyon is nearby, and so are over a dozen state and national parks. Las Vegas is also known for its grand golf courses and resorts – amazing when you consider the fact that Vegas is in the middle of the desert. Moreover, Las Vegas nightlife is one of the most spectacular and varied in the world.
However, the greatest attraction that Las Vegas has for tourists is its casinos. Ironically, it was illegal to gamble in Las Vegas from 1910 to 1931. Las Vegas is now a gambling haven, though. This 340km square area holds one of the most extensive selections of casinos in the world.
There are over around 70 casinos in Las Vegas. The casinos can be found in various places in Las Vegas but most of them can be found along the famous Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas.
